Original Thread: ANTI-SECESSION LAW

One good thing about Taiwan politics, there is never a dull moment. But grave reality is that all these antics have long lasting ramifications.

Lee Teng Hui said : If Taiwan is to unite with Mainland China, then Taiwanese will become slaves.

Sounds like an old man babbling. But the truth is that many people believe him, especially down south, where Lee has moved the battlefield. He has realised that there aren't that many takers for his words up north.

After the Anti-secession law, what next? Taiwanese referendum for independence? New Taiwanese Constitution? A new breakthrough for Taiwan Republic?

That's also one reason for me to leave Taiwan, I just couldn't take it on t.v.

Didn't the TSU lose badly on the last elections. I think people are tired with him. A-Bian didn't want to be associated with him too much. His party, TSU, was very liable to the DPP. What is his story? Was he a pro-independence at heart, even when he was with the KMT, kinda like a betrayer working inside the KMT, Or he is just taking revenge for his humilating ouster from the KMT? Which is it?

China will pass the secession law to give legitimacy to any invasion of Taiwan. China is recognised at the UN. But why does Taiwan want to pass the anti-secession law if it doesnt' have the backing of the international community? And what is the point of mass-rallies? Who's the message for? Is the message for the opposition to give support to the govt in passing the anti-secession law or the China's NPC to take note? If it is the latter, who cares? The will of 1.3billion citizens of mainland or 20+million citizens of Taiwan?

some1 put more details abt da law.... btw no offence 1 billion vs 20 million is a odd comparision. its like i am big therefore i am right!!

Going by the same logic, USSR was bigger than USA. But the reality is USSR was wrong and no longer exists.

I had hardtime understanding your analogy. We are talking about the wishes of the people. As a goverment, do you take the consideration of your 1.3billion citizens or the other 20+million ? Ofcourse you take the majority. And that was in reference to the mass-rallies. Apparently, the mass-rallies were a message to the NPC to show Taiwanese objection to the new law. And in that case, should the NPC pay heed at all?

The analogy was a reply to "its like i am big therefore i am right" It was out of topic. About the 'mass rallies' only 50,000 turn up. Ah Bian absconded. Mr. LEE's TSU held on in the south. That is why he is moving his battlefield down there. He has given on the North.

A war with Taiwan will be a worst case situation for China. If you check the stats, Taiwans the biggest trading partner for China![B)] Might as well punch yourself in the face. All that large economic growth would halt if China does go to war.[>:P]

...but having committed themselves to invading, the mainlanders will have no choice but to go to war if Taiwan declares independence. [:-SS] So now it's all up to Taiwan. Or rather, Lee and Chen. [8-}]

[*-:)] I just had an brainstorm! Okay now I know why the US isn't arming Taiwan to the max! If the US gave Taiwan, lets say Aegies class dystoryers and Patriot missiles China would wussy out! Consider this, China is a rising military and economic power that kind of threatens US domaniance. If Taiwan and the Mainland goes to war the US would make the war long and agonizing for China, like they did to the Soviets in Afganistan. Bringing China to its nees by economic destruction. Having said that, if this does happen is India next?[xx(] Crap! India is the second largest nation in the world and a rising world power. [>:P] I can see it now! US arms Pakistan. Or am I parnoid?

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/detail.asp?ID=60110&GRP=A Read this article. Quote Ah-Bian ""You'd use less than one day to secure peace for a lifetime instead. Just three to four hours to secure the peace of a whole family, old and young."" By passing this law, the ball is in ah-bian's court. Therefore he is ultimately responsible for peace across the Taiwan strait. Just don't declare independence. Why is he blaming on PRC ? When China passed this law, I was in India, with access to news channels, i.e. BBC World. BBC correspondent said it aptly, this law is nothing new. Over the years, people have been saying privately if China is serious about invading. People is starting to have doubts and DPP is getting ever bold. This law was just to negate those boiling doubts. It means China is serious, even at the expense of not holding the Olympics 2008.
