| Chinese learn english because we want to rule the world.
Non Chinese want to learn chinese because they are aware of the shape of things to come. |

Okay, jokes aside. What're you trying to tell us? Get to the point. If you ask a rhetorical question for which there's no "right" answer, that's not going to help you much. Which "Chinese people?" In Mainland? In Calcutta? Or Toronto? And who are these "others?" White people? Indians? Or what? [?] [?] [?] |
| li_wing |
| By Chinese people I meant "Mainland CHinese" and by others I mean in general other people specially from the west.
Dont you think it is such that Mainlanders find it important to know English while , "Others" , specially from the west, seeing the growth & spread of chinese population think that it is important to learn chinese. |
| edwardchiu |
| Yeah, come to think of it, the craze to learn English is very common all over Korea and Japan too. Must be Hollywood-induced.
When I was in Toronto, I went for some basic Mandarin classes. There were about 10 people of Chinese origin.
But aside from us, there were two white Canadians, one French-Canadian, one Indian and one Greek. Guess what these people were there for?
All were there because someone in the family, or a boyfriend or girlfriend, was Chinese [:D]. I guess it's not all business, eh? [^] |

| Chinese as a matter of fact is a very complicated language. Out of every 10 Chinese there is only 1 who knows chinese very well.[>:P] I mean in speaking or in writing.[yap]3 from the list can speak chinese.
English I say is simple and much easy to understand.[:-?] In India the children studies english as it was influenced by the British before the Independence of the country. But not to forget Chinese is one language which is ruling the world.[\:D/]

| It doesn't matter if others think it is important to learn english or learn chinese, what I think is that learning any other language besides your mother tongue will not only benefit yourself but will also get you around places. I strongly agree that English is "THE" most universal language nowadays, but let's not forget there are other languages too.....
We Indian born chinese are lucky in the sense that we know at least 3 languages - Hindi, English & Hakka(or cantonese or Hupak etc). So generally speaking, we have the best of 3 worlds, India, China & the West. But the thing is we do not know our own mother tongue too well. We may listen well, but most of us can't read or write chinese and there are some chinese in India who dont even know how to speak their own mother tongue..........well, I think it's really sad that being a chinese, one cannot even converse in Chinese......
O.K, coming back to the topic...I think it is equally important to learn english or chinese. To know chinese, like someone mentioned earlier, is our birthright. We should be happy to speak in our own dialect, be it Hakka or cantonese or Hupak or Mandarin. A survey conducted by the Reader's Digest showed that children who learn to speak at least 2 languages besides their mother tongue are more bright than children who can only speak one language and their ability to learn and grasp concepts is far more better then their counterparts.
So the moral of the story: It is always better to know one extra language. It wont do you any harm. You can always use that extra language to abuse someone who wont even know what you are blabbering about. |
| aaron_wong |
| [8D]well wise jim has a rule in life which i would like to share with all my fellow people!!!be it any language in this world, nothing is easy to learn if we dont work hard at learning it![L-)] "the secret of sucess is 99% prespiration and 1% inspiration!"[*-:)][*-:)][:)>-] |

| I sure prefer English over Chinese. But right now, that is slowly changing. My English is deteriorating! Pray I don't pick up Taiwanese English. And by chinese I mean Mandarin. There's no one here with whom I can speak Hakka with! Infact when my friends call or my family, I end up speaking in Mandarin!! [:((] |

This is a bit of a myth. It's actually more important to know Mandarin. [=))] The French myth was propagated in the '80's to get Quebec to sign on to the Constitution. Even then, very few people east of Ottawa spoke French. So unless you plan to work in federal government (unlikely) or Quebec (slightly likely), knowing French is totally optional.
However, if you want to set up business, or work in a pvt. business in Toronto, there's a good chance you'll meet three or four customers every day who don't speak English or French at all... and maybe one of these people speak only Chinese! [:0] So it is important to know Chinese. [>:D<]
Anyway, here's a guide to help you decide which language to study. All statistics. [:p]

When a kwai-lor comes to my Asian-land I give highest honor to them for trying to speak and for trying to learn my language, never will I copied or trying to make fun of them or try to embarrass them. Moreover I always encourages them to learn my language...
