Original Thread: Does every Chinese born speaks chinese??
kool_loving_babe
This thought suddenly came to my mind if chinese born really speaks chinese. I know there are many who dont. They are chinese because of name sake. What can be done about this?

roger
Yup many of my cousins in Canada cant' speak chinese. But atleast, they still look like chinez, they still keep chinese surnames.(unique) Unlike the blacks, Denzel Washington for e.g., We can't even make out their race from their names. We should be unique, shouldnt' blend with the west. But what is a hakka that dont' speak hakka ? down the generation, can he/she still safely say he is still 'hakka' ? What is the uniqueness that define the hakka people besides the language ? I guess it is the 'language' difference only.

kool_loving_babe
Same here I know plenty of ppl who looks like chinese but ask them if they know how to speak in chinese be it Hakka, Cantonese or even mandarin. They say "NO".

vin_diesel

If nepalis wanna to mask themselves as chinese, we can't help it. CAn we ? Some 'sharma' can change their name to 'chen' and look very chinese. These people are called impostor [V][:D] If a general chinese don't have chinese name or cant' speak chinese, atleast he/she look chinese, that is a distinguishing mark. I aint' worried about the 'chinese',,,, On a similar topic, I'm worried about how we distinguish ourselves to be a hakka. If hakka dont' speak hakka, how can we truly say we are hakka and not some hokkien/cantonese/fujainese/shanghaiese ??????? [?]

True cos i think that the hakka is, even though one of the seven distinguished cultures of china, from tha Hunan region of the north, are still hidden in the crowds of well known cantons and mandrins... so I think that the problem is the hakka that need recognition and not chinese in general

“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” [:D] I guess it's clear not every Chinese born abroad necessarily speaks Chinese. I agree it would be sad if future generations abroad stopped speaking Hakka entirely. Gosh, we really ought to revive that Pei Mei school! Even if the majority of its students turn out to be Nepalese or Sharmas [;)], at least Indian Chinese children will have a place to study about themselves.

kool_loving_babe
Many of us know how to speak chinese but the problem is we cant write.[:)]

Rottwei||er
ok guys! lets get this straight! First some people say that if they can't speak chinese so they are still chinese? and secondly if any nepali can speak chinese so they become chinese? have i got that straight? First of all i would like to add that if a chinese cannot speak their own mother tongue and a nepali can speak chinese then i am sure u should be ashamed of urself calling urself chinese but don't know ur own mother tongue, while the rest of the world who don't know chinese but take all the pain to learn chinese. I feel chinese who don't know how to speak chinese has nothing nothing to defend themselves with and thus gives million of excuses. YOU GUYS GOT TO BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES... nepali speaks better chinese than u guys who don't know ur own mother tongue. makes me laught all these loser and they have the cheek to give millions of excuses just to defend their rights. Tell me something... if u know how to speak chinese, would be be saying the same thing as in what u all said? people who don't know their own language is not worth to be called chinese!! leave alone knowing their own culture. It also relates to the fact that they were never brought up right. I do understand people living in austria or anywhere... if u have the will to learn ur own mother tongue, u will learn. It just shows that u don't care a damn about ur race and u want to be like the white trash, so u pretent to know a lot more of other language rather than chinese. I myself is not staying in calcutta, but i learn chinese, becauee I respect chinese... and am trying to learn mandarin. people like those looser probably have indian mentality... no further comments!!! P.s: this post is for chinese (who thinks they are chinese) - losers!!!

edwardchiu
Easy now...

K3VIN
true...this is a chinese forum....but that doesn't mean that we all have to speak chinese

jennylee

Firstly it is bad to attack someones race and not being one doesnt give you the right to talk any nonsense. I do not mind if you go blah blah abt your community for which I do not care. I am proud to be a HAKKA and I am also proud that your not one.. LOL!! I mean geez you have made this into a racial discrimination issue.. we are chinese..period and please do not make a further division of it. It doesnt matter if your a chinese but cant speak its language for there are other communities that are far off worse than us.

K3VIN
that is so tru....so born here in canada cant speak a word of chinese

vin_diesel

kool_loving_babe
I feel Rottwei||er is right. I agree to what he said. And its true some Nepali can speak better chinese.

Look I am a chinese who can only speak to from my experiences, There are many issues involved in our everyday life and through this, it is what we are made up of 1) My social upbringing has been around the so called Indian community, so there were hardly any chinese ppl that I could converse or intereact with. 2) Also I wasnt born with a golden spoon (wish I had) in my hand that my parents could be there 24 hours around me, looking after and nurturing my needs. 3) My grandparents were either migrated abroad or wasnt alive to nourish my linguistic skills. so am I to be blamed for not speaking chinese like some of my fellow beings? To add to my woes, we moved to India where we were brought up like typical chinese indians, I specify chinese indians because we are alittle different in our ways of thinking and our ideals definitely do not match our counter parts. (patriotism withstanding) I think this is a very sensitive issue and shows signs of being patriotic to our motherland. So if you were to say that knowing chinese language makes you a chinese ...then why are chinese ppl staying in US, Canada, India , Sweden, Austria, Australia, Germany, Bangladesh or Pakistan? Go back to China! lol!! Why go brouhaha about our language? If you know English.. thats far better off as it is the most widely spoken language, knowing more languages is definitely an advantage.

K3VIN
this world is too influence by the american lifestyle and everyone is focusing more on trying to be like george bush if they aren't focusing on becoming the next hitler...were all just trying to get the US to like us

vin_diesel
didnt mean to touch emotional chords...but hakkaloo is a common phrase back home?... well if Rot and bren agree abt nepz speakin chinese better.....dats wot i am askin....wot makes us to call ourselves chinese??? language on it own doest does it...??most of speak hindi...does it make us hindu?????? some of us do not ahve da ability to speak chinese....embarassment...yes!!does it makes us lesser chinese or "namesake" chinese???no!.... BUT AGAIN DA Q IS...wot r YOU gonna do abt it??....discriminate??or say i kno chinese so i am better??? also if i may say...every1 ahs touch of indianess in them....but i wonder y all like to deny it...

roger
This is getting crazy and out of context. No one is racial discriminating here. LMAO [:D] We are chinese because of our apperance, our culture, our language, our surnames, our customs. All included. Remove one or two still makes us chinese. Remove all ? hmmm. Then I don't know. [There is no problems in distinguishing a chinese] But, I repeat again, what makes a hakka/canto/shanghaiese/fujianese ? Is it just because of the dialect or there is something more to it. That was what I meant by distinguishing a hakka from a fujianese. Samcha ???[8D]

The basic distinguishing characteristics that strikes out to me are : - 1)Our food habits are generally different by way of preparation, the spices involved and perhaps consumption. 2)If I am not wrong even the funeral rites are performed differently but recently the cantonese are following the way of the hakka by having lunches after the burial ( I do not know if the cantonese ppl do it). In certain parts of India, dead bodies are taken to crematorium rather than the burial sites, these are some of the aspects of changes that has been undergoing of late. 3) Speaking of my experiences, I would say Hakka way of thinking is more orthodox as compared to the others.
