| Does Taiwan allows dual citizenship? If so, then shouldn't throw Indian passport then.
If I have the chance to hold two, why not ?

| I wonder why all countries don't offer it? They're all in favour of free movement of goods, capital, intellectual property, etc. Human resources and skills are tradeable items too. |

| Yes, it is O.K to hold 2 passports but the thing here in Taiwan is that having a Taiwan Passport ONLY does NOT give you citizenship...to be a Citizen of Taiwan (and hence reap all the benefits that comes with Citizenship), you need to have the ID card....if you don't have that, you are still not considered a citizen....You can't do many things, like sponsor your parents to Taiwan etc....and worst of all, you need to leave the island every 4 mths (Going to Bali and Thailand is good though!!!![^])....but then the downside of having the ID card means you will get conscripted into the Military and that's 1 and a half years of hell with no salary to earn. [:(!] ...seems to me both options aren't good...I would go for the Marriage visa (JFRV) or the much sought after but almost impossible to get ...the APRC [^] |

| When you talk about Marriage Visa (JFRV), could you elaborate? Does it exempt you from doing military service? |

I don't think it's possible to have Taiwan passport if you don't have the Taiwan ID. You can apply for a passport only when you have the ID.... If i am not wrong [8-|]

Yes, you are right. How can one apply for a passport if he doesn't have an ID. A passport is just a travel document, the ID is more important. ( I believe this applies for every country, even India, they asked for your "Ration Card" to prove your identity !!). But my question here is you also need a " Household Certificate" to be a real citizen. That's the tricky part. Becos once you enter your name into your own or someone else's "household Certificate" you have become a pucca Taiwanese and that's when the call comes for military.
Taiwan still allows dual or triple citizenship. They keep one eye closed when it comes to this matter as many big lawmakers kids are holding two. But I believe for newcomers they are forcing you to give up your Indian one if you want to reside permanently in Taiwan.
OR, you hold a ARC and go in and out every few months.
Final point, if India allows dual citizenship, I don't mind holding two but I wouldn't use the "Indian passport" to ENTER KOLKATA !! Would rather make a visa and go with the Taiwan Passport and stand in the VISITORS line and move out fast rather than being "harrased" and pushed by the Indians and Immigration B....... in the "Indians Only" line.

Must be a Calcutta thing. Never had a problem in Delhi. Incidentally, the customs limit for Indians is Rs.25,000 now, which is such a high amount that unless you're carrying gold, the customs people in Delhi don't even bother trying to decide if your luggage is worth more than that. |

| I have been living out of India for the past 8 years and go home once a year. And never faced such hassle.
On the other hand, my 40+ year old uncle holding a Taiwan passport was 'harassed' for bringing his video-camera.
It had been ages since customs officials were brought from other states, lesser harrasment and the line takes a maximum of 30mins to clear.
@Jackal, when was the last time you went back?
