Original Thread: India makes Olympic breakthrough

An Indian soldier has won his country's first ever individual silver medal at the Olympic Games.

Major Rajyavardhan Rathore came second in the men's double trap shooting event in Athens.

Rathore reached the Olympic final of the men's double trap after finishing fifth with a tally of 135 points from three rounds in the preliminary stage.

He scored 44 in the final round - behind Ahmed Almaktoum of the United Arab Emirates who won gold. China's Zheng Wang collected bronze.

The only other Indian athletes ever to win individual medals at the Olympics are Khashba Jadhav in the 1952 Helsinki Games, Leander Paes at Atlanta in 1996 and Karnam Malleshwari in Sydney 2000, all of them bronze medals.

Well, I feel happy for him and the country, a job well done.

When I see cricket, I see commercialism and showoffs, but when I see an olympian, i.e. an amateur sportsman, who gets a silver for his country, I am proud of him, especially considering the financial difficulties in sponsorships deals that the Indian Olympic Assoc is suffering through.

There was a huge debate many years back in the parliament whether to even sent any team to the games.

Now aim for the Gold.
