Frankly, I think what the BJP govt had done for the past 5 years is appreciated, on the other hand, the Congress have been relying too much on the Gandhi family, why on earth did Rahul Gandhi sign up, just because to draw in votes.
It is time they lay out the future policies than rely on family politics, they are more fanfare than of any substance.
Not to forget, I strongly support Congress party policy on secularism. The BJP early tactic to divide the hindus and muslims inorder to get the hindus' vote is totally cheap. |

I think the Calcutta Chinese community can and should use its still-considerable resources to influence power. There was a peak in the 70's and 80's when its wealth and economic clout was at high tide, and if my information's correct, its population was over 30,000! If it had pooled together its money instead of wasting it on a temple somewhere, we could've had at least a Chinese MLA in the WB assembly, if not an MP in Delhi.
At the very least, someone should've come up with a plan to improve the roads and sewers in Tangra. Fixing a water treatment plant was also very costly, but in hindsight, don't you think it was preferable to being moved out to some God-forsaken village 50 km away?
But hindsight's always 20-20, as they say... Those years were a wasted opportunity, but I think we can still get a stake in power. Whereas we could've done it all by ourselves back then, we will need allies now, but I think people will support a strong Chinese leader, because they generally trust that we're more honest and hard-working than Indians [:D] as we discussed in a [url="http://www.wowchinese.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=307"]previous thread[/url].
So maybe not this election, but five years down the road, does anyone have a plan to take charge of India? Or do our plans of the future necessarily involve migrating out of India? |

| As for the BJP, I think they're a total sham. The way I see it, our progress is all due to Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh, whose policies the BJP opposed in 1994 and are adopting now as their own! The cheek of them! Reforms take time, and Rao and Singh's work is only becoming effective now.
The BJP are just a bunch of lucky stiffs. If Musharraf hadn't invaded Kargil in 1999, I'm sure we'd have a Congress coalition ruled by Manmohan Singh today.
And Kargil too was a total intelligence failure and a military bungle. We won simply because we had more men to throw at the limited Pakistani troops. It never should've happened, and India's response was remarkable for its military incompetence.
What more can I say? How about Togadia, Narendra Modi, Joshi vs. IIMs, worsening law and order...? Can't say for sure it'll be better under the Congress, but as I mentioned, the BJP can't and shouldn't claim that "India Shining" was due to them when it was actually Rao and Singh's doing. |

And....
a) Chinese are rich, but no economic clout becoz all are black money.
b) At the peak population of 30,000 in the 70s, most were still holding chinese passports, even then, 30,000 is not at all enough to influece much in the voting of a MP.
c) Yes, if we pool together, we could influence our choice of local MLA, but a Chinese MLA ?
d) If my knowledges isnt' wrong, chinese only got to earning big in the early late 80's, and that was also when the big migration to Canada/Europe was taking place.
e) And when we are not paying taxes, we dont ask anything from KMC, building roads and cleaning sewers are least of our worries, we can hire cheap labour to do that. |

We even had a chinese stand up as an independent candidate for one of the constituency in our state, but fate was already sealed long before she entered the fray.

| Yes, the congress during the Narashima Rao's goverment speeded up India's economic reforms while the BJP was running on Swadeshi. They were elected on a platform of hindu nationalism and they promised to halt India's liberalisation.
But, But, But, they accelerated (atleast didn't halt) the reform when in govt. themselves. We must give this credit to them atleast.
So, since I hardly read the India section of FEER/Asiaweek, I wouldnt know if the seeds of today's Indian red-hot 8% economic growth was sowed by the Rao's or Vajpayee Govt.
All I know is, with the USA presidential election coming, Pres. Bush is on the receiving end on the no. of jobs outsourced to India. |

Ok, this "sucking the wealth out of a country", or racism against the locals (well, there ARE some people who are kinda racist, this you cannot deny. If you aren't one of them, bravo! The human race still have hope!) are certain 'qualities' found in the chinese community almost around the world.
I know from my malaysian friends and overseas chinese elsewhere as to how they dislike the locals. Infact when for an English class presentation, four of us overseas chinese did one on our countries. The teacher was impressed saying it's nice to know we identify with our citizenship.
India is all I have anyways. I sure know a hell lot more about India than I know of China or Taiwan or anywhere else. What choices do I have? Having spent 18 years in India which is 18/19 out of my whole life so far, I have to affiliate myself with India. But do I dislike being called Indian? I admit, I do. I always tell them am an oversea CHINESE born in India. Why the insistence? Because people seemed to be more racist to Indians than the Chinese? Perhaps. It's bad of me to be this way, but I guess I don't want to be discriminated. |

Such people would've been wasted if they stayed. For e.g. Sabeer Bhatia, Jagdish Bhagwati, CK Prahalad, Zubin Mehta, even Nehru and Patel...

| I have to admit Mamata was a god Railway Minister. Heck...giving Laloo the portfolio of Railway is like handing an axe to Hannibal!! My worst travelling nightmare was when I passed through Bihar on the way to Nainital- what a journey!! As my friend Eddie put it "The train is stopping at every station and between stations!"
The next thing we know, we will soon have cows and sheep in all the compartments.

I remove my secondary school days, I used to study in Sahibganj which was in Bihar but now in Jharkhand.
Used to go home by the Danapur Express, cream delea of Indian Railways. The Danapur Express was supposed to arrive from Danapur at around 9.30pm and then connect up with a single bogey reserved for Sahibganj Jnc, and then takes us to Howrah.
So we move into the single bogey, But.... by 11`12, the train haven't yet arrived and we young kids choose to sleep early, can't keep on waiting for the T.T. We wake up by 7a.m. next morning hoping to be in Bengal by then but amazingly to find the single bogey is still in Sahibganj.
I wonder if this express is still running.
And if I dont' forget, 15yrs back, there was even a 3rd-class bogey, with wooden planks as the bed.

| A train derailed yesterday southeast of Bombay killing at least 20 ppl. Minister of Railways Laloo Prasad Yadav said he would compensate the families of the victims with Rs100000 and further said that the accident was "unavoidable" bacause of a boulder lying on its tracks. In other words, what he meant was he cannot do anything when boulders lies on the tracks or the tracks gets damaged. Hmmmmm............so much for being a "good" Railway minister. I would think twice before riding on a train in India with him still as the minister for railways.

BUT NOW I HEARD TO PREVENT TRAIN HITTING BOULDERS, IR / KONKAN RAILWAY HAS AMONG OTHER SAFETY MEASURES, FOR THE IMMEDIATE PRESENT, A RAILWAY ENGINE WILL PILOT EVERY PASS. TRAIN IN LANDSLIDE PRONE AREAS.

| Well, a shrewdy Laloo is.
For instance, I read online the other day that he proposed to replace plastic cups used in the railways (Chai Kofi! Kofi Chai!) with earthern cups. What do you know? He says it's enviornmental friendly. The potters sure's pleased though. But what he says is kinda true though. Maybe some will say that earthern cups are unhygenic, then again, I don't think it's real cool to pour boiling hot liquid into plastic cups either, tastes funny too!
