So what you guys make of the current visit by Lien Chan, Chairman of the KMT, to China.
Things are hottening up and should be interesting.
1. Anti-secession law had been passed, despite some displeasure from the EU and US, Lien Chan visit had done to cool down the pressure.
2. The visit ends half a century of rivalry between the KMT and the CCP, the two great parties of the chinese nation, putting the DPP in a corner. Whew!
3. James Soong will be visiting China soon, with a personal message from Ah-Bian. China should rebuff any contacts with Ah-Bian. Wait till 2008 for a change in govt, no credit should ever be given to him.
4. Though nothing much significant came out of Lien's visit, and hardly suprising, but China could have pointed some of the missles the other way, as a show of goodwill to the KMT and the Taiwanese compatriats. They did the same to US. It would mean an hour or less in repositioning the weapon in case of war. But then, perhaps, there is other reasons to it.
5. China has offered 3 gifts a) 2 giant pandas, b) relaxation of mainlanders tourist to Taiwan c) tariff-free export of produce to China
I think the last point should be a thing to watch.
a) Already a Panda habitat is in construction in Taipei Zoo, so it means behind-the-scenes negotiation is going on. If the panda do ultimately go to Taipei, it would a diplomatic coup for China, it will remind the Taiwanese that they are still Chinese.
The DPP are weary, hahaha, they ran multiple ads on major newspapers to warn the public that the panda is a trozan. (I am loving it) Yet they risk been labeled paranoid, afterall the pandas are so cute and the public love them. The DPP are in testy waters now.
b) Naturally Taiwan cannot open the floodgates for mainland toursits for national security reasons, yet at the same time, with a fledging economy any incentives would be welcomed. The President of the National Federation of Tourist Agents would be travelling with James Soong to China to upt the ante on DPP on relaxation of the quota.
c) The Taiwan cabinet has ruled out increasing produce exports to China anytime soon. Again for valid reasons. But at the same time, the DPP risk the wrath of the farmers, their main constituent.
To quote a DPP spokeperson "It's nothing but part of China's united front campaign.""
I ultimately hope that direct links could be opened and some games for the Olympics 2008 will be held in Taipei. I also hope that the 1992 cosensus reached in H.K. is accepted by the two sides. And if there is any movement on this issues, Ah-Bian should never never be credited. CCP should remember that KMT is their ally now.
