Howz the master degree in taiwan ? Is it tough for us Indian OCS ? Is there much Indian OCS in the past .....?

max_payne
formosa, how in what sense? u mean the number of subjects u have to go through to prepare for masters? it isn't tough when u get to go for tuition and i do not think there is much indian-chinese ocs in the past that appeared for masters..a handful may be...can take tution materials from best mates and start from those...oh yes reference books is a must.

Might consider a Masters in Taiwan myself someday... [:-?] Anything in fibres and fabrics there? [:D]

Tution? It aint tution at all. It is cram-course. I say it is tough, no more concession for OCS, like they give in under-graduate. Need to battle with the locals and they are good. I mean if you are applying for master in the tops colleges, dont' even consider 3rd rate unversities, just imagine how tuff it is to join NTU. Among the OCS, the malaysians are the most studious, IBCs only good at the subject MOS.

[=))] Surely you're being too harsh, Rog. [:p] But why'd you say that? [:(] [:-?]

max_payne
that was misleading...for a moment i thought they were really good at MOSfets @@"

Most Taiwanese continue their masters. Pay for master is even higher, atleast for the Science field.

Few things one needs to know when applying for Masters: you need to give a rather (unfair?) elaborate exam, and one of the subjects is Chinese. Not your ordinary rudimentary Chinese, but something that would be expected from a prospective PG student. This is a killer that will choke all your hopes. I personally feel that Indian OCS can manage and excel at all other subjects with elan. A cram school is a must, with their mock tests, study tips and tutorials/materials. This gives you an idea of what to expect and the feel of the real thing.....the only downside is the cost. Tell you what...a graduate from India (and elsewhere) can apply for PG courses through the local representative. I know of at least one person who did, successfully. but then, the choice of the University is left entirely to the discretion of the authority concerned. PS: there was this rule that OCS who have graduated can apply at the Overseas Affairs Office. I dont know whether the rule still exists.

I think there must be some misunderstanding here. I don't think you have to give a chinese exam at all, in fact most of the questions are in English. If your grades are high, you don't have to give an exam, you just apply, they call you for an interview and you are in! And I don't think the fees are higher for the science field. For national university, it's around NT$25,000/semester and NT$1500/credit, the national science council give us NT$4000/month and our adviser give us NT$8000/month as stipend. For those who are considering to go for phD, try TIGP of Academia Sinica, its a program for international student. you get a stipend of NT$30,000/month, there are many Indians (not IBCs) who have enrolled.

You are right, but that exam i heard was for international students only. OC students do a different exam. i could be wrong, but that was what i was told the l;ast time i inquire. they asked about the visa i was holding, the status (international or overseas) then told me to give the exam along with the local!!

Yeah, if your marks are not high enough then you have to give exams along with the locals but as far as I know even the locals don't have to give a chinese exam. you have to choose 2 to 3 subjects, like for science they have common subjects like biology, molecular biology, cell biology, life science, etc. all the questions are in English (at least in all the national universities), if you pass then they usually call you for an interview. For those under-graduates who are in the science field and considering to go for a master degree then getting some lab experience is very important. Find a good lab in your university, go and learn some basic techniques (if the professor is nice then you even get paid for it), it's very helpful when you go and apply for a master degree. Most adviser will welcome you to the lab if you tell them you have lab experience. Is there anyone who's doing very well in school? I mean good grades, top of the class. If so, contact me. I was getting a full scholarship, school fees plus hostel fees, fully paid for, every semester, maybe you can apply for it too!

Wow Rene, you seen to be having a lot of information. Could you tell me please where are you studying right now? As for me, i didnt sit for any exams while entering university. I just gave a listening and objective test in English and Chinese after being admitted. Just to see how much i could understand..!!...[8-}]

What I meant was a science student sure can expect a fatter salary with a Master Degree. And AFAIK, most subjects in the ART/Economics are in Chinese. And lets get one thing straight. When we talk about a Master, I hope we mean top rate schools. Not every easy to get into NTU's electrical engineering dept.
