Due to expediency, I'm taking the direct Delhi-Toronto Air Canada flight this time, but I got mixed feelings about the service. I would rate my favourite airlines as:
1 & 2. Singapore International and Jet Airways tie 3. Indian Airlines 4. BA 5. KLM
And my least preferred:
1 & 2. Air India and Air Canada tie 3. Whatever else
The absolute worst incident of my whole air travel life so far was from London to Toronto last September. The flight's one hour late to check in. Halfway over the Atlantic - TWO HOURS into our flight!! - someone has a medical emergency and we're back to Glasgow! Where we wait in the plane for another two hours.
Same flight - before medical emergency - the pursers are giving people their drinks. So being on the aisle, I get my water first. The trolley's still there, so I ask for a refill. And she says, "Well, everybody needs a drink..." And refuses to refill!! What the heck! I'm all for a socialist state, but this is ridiculous. "Everybody needs a drink??" Is the plane likely to run out of water?
In contrast, the preceding flight from Singapore to London was all courtesy and service! And it was a MUCH longer flight.
Air Canada's just not ready for prime time. I wonder how many of them read their manuals and how often they train? It feels like a unionized outfit with no incentives to improve service and loads of government protection. There's just no "feel" for customer relations. Now I'm taking a 15-hour journey in this unfriendly outfit. Shouldn't prejudge, of course... But one other thing worries me. When my mother was coming back to Delhi in December, the plane DID run out of water!! Both drinking and in the toilet... They probably had to advise people to drink Black Label. |
