Original Thread: Posting rules for the forum - discussion
edwardchiu
I see the last set of posting guidelines was issued in 2003. Since it doesn't contain many items, how about voting in some more formal rules? I'll propose some here and we can discuss and modify them or add new ones.

So here we go:

1. No pornography or illegal software, or links to sites that distribute them, or discussions on how to illegally crack software. You may do that in private messages to other users or through e-mail, but no posting such stuff publicly.

2. Remain courteous and respectful to other users at all times. No personal attacks on other users (e.g., you can say that someone holds a "stupid point of view," but it's not okay to call that person stupid).

3. No hateful, homophobic, racially- or ethnically-objectionable material. Inflammatory posts will be ridiculed sarcastically, trodden and spat upon (with due respect to the poster), and finally, unceremoniously dumped from the forum.

4. Repeated harrassment of other users on or off the forums is strictly prohibited and will result in deletion of your account and a report of your behaviour being sent to your ISP. Remember, moderators and site admins can see everyone's IP addresses.

5. Do not tYpE lIkE tHiS or L1K3 7h15.

6. Do not type entire messages or topic titles in ALL CAPS.

7. Do not post the same thing repeatedly (Spamming). Posting the same thing in multiple forums (cross posting) is also not allowed, but you can link to posts in other forums. E.g. if you make a post in "The Road Side CHAI Shop", you cannot repeat it in "Shih-Lin Night Market," but you can say, "Look at my other post in the other forum."

8. Never re-post something a moderator has deleted (in any forum).

9. Do not register usernames that are deliberately offensive, like swear words and anything that breaks the forums rules.

10. You are prohibited from using the forum (and the site) to spam other users or to collect information on users like e-mail addresses, phone nos., etc. without their agreement.

11. Double logins (multiple accounts) are prohibited.

12. Failure to comply with any of the forum rules may result in your posts being deleted and/or your account being temporarily or permanently banned from the forums.

13. These rules apply to all users and affect all posts made in these forums.

Bump. Thanks, Kevin. Additions and comments are welcome.

Yup, there should be some rules but I think we shouldn't be too restrictive. Freedom of expression. I think we can scrap 5 and 6. Simple, if the person type it hard to read, ppl wont' read their posts. And I tend to ignore post where ppl swear, like dogs barking. but others can get offended, so moderators should delete such posts. [:)]

5 and 6... wat abt 7....sure it gets annoying the cross posting but wat abt the fact that the ppl might type the link in wrong and it may not work...then again, the last two are also endnotes and not part of the actual rules

Earlier, user's email was visible to everyone and there were some Indians gathering the hotmail/yahoo ids of girls and playing around.[V] So I had to hide the email of our users, visitors can only send email to users through this website.

With regard to an identical post in another forum, it's the poster's responsibility to get the link right. Besides, even without the link, people can easily deduce and find the post being referred to. In case of identical posts, I propose moderators lock one of the posts and direct people to see the other. Yeah, I guess we can drop 5 and 6. Yeah, 12 and 13 aren't exactly rules, but they're up for discussion. Like, do the rules apply AFTER they're passed, or should they govern ALL posts made in the past too? I think they should govern all posts.

Well, no one's opposed the rules in general so far. Okay, if there's no objection, I'll put it in the sticky thread. The final draft stands as edited above.

This is a social website. How about discussion for crack software ? We would want more activity and not gaggle up the users. How many here use legal software? If this was a 'above 18' website, I would even go with pornography. All of us are adults. And this is only my personal thought, lets see what others thinks. Contradictory views anyone ??? [:)]

Good points. But a lot of us live in the US or Canada and have real information in our profiles. There've been a lot of crackdowns on home users there, so you have to CYA by not posting such information publicly unless you can't be identified. Second point: adult sites should have adult warnings.

Nicely stated. But as a moderator, we can't restrict someone posting cracked software, he is liable for his own posts. He should self-censor.
