I have heard people decrying the supposedly high tax rate in some countries and bemoaned the fact that Govt. subsidies are scarce.
At the same time, these very people take pride in dodging taxes and finding 'loopholes' in the tax system.
For me, I think this is a "Cause & Effect situation". If taxes are not paid by the people, where will the Govt. get the 'dough' for subsidies?
I believe Jesus as quoted in the Bible said : "........... Render unto Caesar what is due to Caesar." Should this be the motivation for paying taxes? |

| Goverment should have some form of revenue, whatever the means, to maintain the public infrastructure. It can be through GST (taxes), income tax (your topic), or business tax, etc.
Therefore to answer your question, it depends.
HK never charged GST, but recently because of lesser revenue, they have been contemplating GST.

It is not a question taking "pride" in dodging taxes. It is knowing the rules and applying them to pay JUST what is required to pay of oneself.
If you are single and a salaried person, you don't have any dependants whose amount can be USED to reduce your taxes. You may end up paying MORE than a married couple with dependants.
A single ( unmarried person ) may end up paying more taxes than a married couple. It depends on you how you calculate your taxes and see which METHOD is LOWER for you and use the lower one. It is not DODGING taxes but "Doing the right thing".
If you are married and you put in your forms as SEPERATE individuals, it may turn up that you pay MORE than IF BOTH of you put in TOGETHER as ONE ... This is just an example and there are many ways to reduce your taxes ( NOT DODGE ).
Why pay 100,000 when you can reduce it to 50,000 by knowing the rules and laws and applying them properly, after all it is YOUR hard earned money, isn't it ?
A person doing business making a profit of 5 million a year can end up paying lesser tax than an individual who is working on salary ( income less than 1 million a year ) by using his head and just UTILIZING the exemptions available to him here and there. It is not DODGING but paying as less as one can and yet be legal. This is where the South Indians holding a calculator in their hands and going over your ledger books come in handy for you.
You will also be surprised to hear that there are many forms of businesses which are FULLY exempted from paying Sales or Income Tax..
In some countries the MAXIMUM exemptable limit so low damn LOW that it sounds ridiculous. How does the Govt expect people to survive on that low limit ?

Are you referring to Taiwan tax system, they print tax manuals at the back of returns. If you know how to read Chinese that is, or is it Taiwanese?

| Now, that the 'Award' thing is being sorted out. (not an awrd but a gift.) I will come back to the topic.
The topic is 'Should we pay taxes?' Against the run of discussion, the question of calculation of taxes was introduced.
To make the matter worse, this 'award' thing came out. This 'award' thing brings out another interesting topic which shall be introduced.
The point is some people start shooting off in all directions and wanders off from the topic. |
