Original Thread: Telegraph Newspaper Headlines overdone?

What do you think about the HEADLINES of www.telegraphindia.com?

Either you admire it or hate it.

I think the Editor is over-using his english, have to spent some time figuring what the headlines means, unlike news.bbc.co.uk or cnn.com

  • Anju at ease, home prays
  • Twin ¡¥terror¡¦ catches in city
  • Mumbai drops jaw at the sight of bearded Tiger
  • Carrots in budget minus discussion

Absolutely! As a former student of journalism [;)] I prefer direct headlines instead of hints and flaccid attempts at "cleverness." [L-)] I don't know what the Indian journalism schools teach, but the Western ones are very concerned about this point. And the writing leaves a lot to be desired too. I don't like indirectness and wordplay where serious journalism is concerned, like the Budget.

I never really did like the headlines in telegraphindia.....they try to beat around the bush, play around with the english vocabulary, show off their "great" eng skills and most of all they try to hype and spice up the news when in reality it is just some ordinary boring news..... I always wanted to say something about the headlines in the telegraph being too stupid but now that Roger has mentioned it, I guess I aint the only one who dislikes it.

I never excelled in English-I, my marks always hovered around 75, and when I failed to understand the Telegraph while reading at my dad's office, I asked my dad if it was my bad English, that was 10 years ago. He agrees with me that their journalist are using difficult-to-understand English. 10 years later, with my English much better, I can confidently can say they dont' any good to readers.
